What you used to be able to do (and shouldn't do anymore):
- Keyword Stuffing: Cramming keywords into paragraphs unnecessarily resulted in unnatural-sounding content that prioritized search engines over readers. This is a big no-no now.
- Forced Expertise: Forming non-coherent sentences by trying to assert a persona of expertise through keyword overload. Google looks for genuine content that users can understand.
- Black-Hat Tactics: Inserting illegible or unnoticeable text just for indexing purposes (keyword cloaking) was a sneaky tactic that Google now penalizes.
Steps to take now: Focus on Quality Content and User Experience
- Find a healthy balance in keyword assimilation: Integrate your target keywords naturally throughout your content. Aim for a relevant keyword density, meaning the keywords appear a reasonable number of times compared to the total word count. Our experts recommend a density of 2%, or 2 keywords per 100 words.
- Prioritize user experience: Write clear, concise, and engaging content that fulfills the searcher’s intent. Google rewards websites that offer value to users.
- Target long-tail keywords: Go beyond single-word keywords and target longer, more specific phrases that users are likely to search for. This helps attract qualified traffic.
- Focus on semantic relevance: Incorporate synonyms and related terms around your main keyword. This shows Google your content comprehensively covers the topic, and assert yourself as an expert.
Leverage natural language processing (NLP): Search engines are becoming adept at understanding the context and meaning behind your content. Write naturally and let your expertise shine through.
